The Rise of Silk Wallpaper: Why Designers Are Choosing Silk Substrates
Silk has a shimmer and subtle texture that adds depth and richness to a space and often a luxurious option for commercial interiors.
Our Silk wallpaper substrate has a variable gloss finish created by silk fibres in the surface. A medium depth texture and rough surface carry a silk textured embossing that recreates a convincing fabric-like appearance, so the wall reads as woven cloth rather than a print of it.
What does silk do that other textures cannot?
Silk gives you MOVEMENT. Grasscloth gives you grain and canvas gives you weight,but silk changes as you move past it. A silk surface has a variable gloss because the fibres catch light at different angles across the wall. Walk past it and the tone shifts. Stand still and the wall reads as a single colour with depth underneath. In a hotel corridor lit by wall sconces, or a boardroom taking afternoon sun on one side, that shift is what stops a large wall area reading flat and institutional.
Silk also carries colour differently. A metallic or pearl base under a printed design produces luminescence rather than saturation, which is why silk works in schemes where a solid colour would feel heavy.
Where do silk substrates work best?
Silk wallpapers suit large wall areas that need visual interest without pattern, in environments with a demanding cleaning schedule.
• Hospitality. Hotel corridors, lobbies and function rooms, where a large surface has to hold interest without a busy pattern.
• Pubs and licensed venues. Feature walls that need to look expensive under low light and survive hard cleaning.
• Workplace. Boardrooms and client-facing floors where a silk finish signals investment without adding colour to a restrained palette.
• Aged care and healthcare. Warmth and softness in environments that usually get neither, on a substrate rated for the cleaning regime those spaces run.
